Fitness watches: a practical buying checklist

Research-based guide. Use this checklist to compare a fitness watch to your actual training and daily habits. No device is presented as personally tested here.

Start with the activities you track

Make a short list of your training modes and the measurements you will actually review. Check current compatibility with your phone, training apps and any accessories you already own.

Compare everyday comfort

Consider case size, strap material, display visibility, controls and charging frequency. Published battery estimates can depend on settings and GPS use, so read the maker’s conditions for those estimates.

Check data and privacy choices

Review the app’s account requirements, sync options, health-data permissions and export features. Health measurements on a consumer watch should be understood within the manufacturer’s stated intended use; do not treat an ordinary fitness metric as a diagnosis.

Before checkout

  • Confirm warranty and water-resistance limits for your intended activity.
  • Check whether desired features need a paid subscription.
  • Verify current price, available sizes and return terms with the retailer.
